Comdial SMDR formats: DXP, DX80, FX, DSU2, MP5000

Advanced PBX Data Logger includes 10 parsers for Comdial systems. This page gathers them in one place. For each system you will find how the call records reach the logger, the parser to select, and the 93 fields in total that these parsers extract for PBX Reports or a database. The settings apply to our logger; other call accounting software may expect a different configuration.

Connecting the logger

Add a data source in PBX Data Logger that matches the interface named in each section: RS232 for a serial SMDR port, TCP client when the PBX accepts connections, TCP server when the PBX pushes records to the logger, or FTP for systems that write CDR files. Then open Modules → Query Parse Filter → Data query, click Setup and select the parser named in the section. The general steps are shown on the SMDR listener page; every other supported system is listed on the supported PBX index.

Record format notes

  • Generic Comdial SMDR is column-based: 1-4 station number left, 6-8 line number right, 9-12 one/two-letter call identifier, 13-20 date, 22-26 time, 29-33 duration, 36-39 ring time, 43-58 digits dialed, 65-71 call cost.
  • The call identifier code at columns 9-12 flags call origin: A=ANI, D=Direct Inward Station Dialing, F=Call Forward Outside System, V=DISD violation, NT=Network call, TT=line to line transfer.
  • An outgoing call must be off-hook at least 20 seconds or no SMDR record is generated; unused columns are shown as spaces and ring time is blank for outbound calls.
  • Comdial SMDA (accounting) records use a different column layout: 1-5 month/day, 7-11 time, 15-18 station, 21-28 account code, 30-34 duration, 46 call type I/O, 54-56 line number, 61-76 digits dialed.

Switching SMDR output on, as documented

  1. Dial 77 then dial 2 to reach 'SMDR PRINT XXX', then dial 1 to enable printing ('SMDR PRINT ON') or dial 2 to disable ('SMDR PRINT OFF').
  2. Dial 77 then dial 1 to toggle SMDR cost reporting on or off, adding call cost to the SMDR printout.
  3. Dial 15, then dial 1 for data port A or 2 for data port B, then choose the baud rate (110 through 19200) and word length/stop bits (7 data/2 stop or 8 data/1 stop).

Record format notes

  • SMDR is generated as soon as each call record is collected (real time), not batched.

Switching SMDR output on, as documented

  1. Enter Database Administration with Feature # * and the DB Admin password, then program item 03-30-01 to enable/disable SMDR for outgoing calls.
  2. Program item 03-30-02 to enable/disable SMDR for incoming calls.
  3. Program item 03-30-03 to include/exclude the account code in the SMDR field.
  4. Program item 04-16 (CIL X_RATE) to set the SMDR serial port baud rate.

Record format notes

  • Record layout header: D EXT TRK DGT_DIALED RING DATE TIME DURATION ACCOUNT, in an 80-character frame; D = call direction (I incoming, O outgoing, A operator transferred, H recalled trunk, L conference).
  • Incoming calls with Caller ID produce two SMDR records: the first with the calling number, the second with the caller's name (or OUT OF AREA / PRIVATE).
  • DATE is Day/Month (DD/MM) format; account code is max 8 digits left aligned; digits dialed max 16 digits left aligned.

  1. Enable the SMDA Attendant feature so the attendant can delete SMDA records from system memory, via INTERCOM # 0 827.
  2. Enable forced account codes with verification under System Parameters so the system checks entered codes against programmed entries before allowing dialing.

Switching SMDR output on, as documented

  1. Press CONTROL T for the main menu, select the reports/parameters menu, choose the SMDR Print Parameter item, and press SPACE BAR to turn continuous SMDR printout on.
  2. Choose either SMDR or SMDA record format via the SMDR Record Format item before configuring reports.
  3. From a station, dial INTERCOM # 0 82 then a report code (1=all records, 2=station, 3=line, 4=account code, 5=department, 6=automatic reports, 7=delete all records) to request SMDA reports.

Record format notes

  • SMDR and SMDA use different column layouts even on the same DXP Plus system; SMDA columns: 1-5 value, 7-11 station, 15-18 month/day, 21-28 time, 30-34 duration, 37-43 hold time/meter pulse/cost, 54-56 call type I/O, 61-76 ring time.
  • Each SMDR/SMDA record ends with a carriage return/line feed.

Reports and a database

Once records arrive, the logger writes them to a text file or to any ODBC database in real time, or hands them to the PBX Reports utility for manual, scheduled and e-mailed reports with a built-in web server. See exporting call log data to a database for the database setup.
