Avaya Merlin 1030, 3070 and Magix SMDR formats

Advanced PBX Data Logger includes 3 parsers for Avaya Merlin systems. This page gathers them in one place. For each system you will find how the call records reach the logger, the parser to select, and the 24 fields in total that these parsers extract for PBX Reports or a database. The settings apply to our logger; other call accounting software may expect a different configuration.

Systems on this page

Connecting the logger

Add a data source in PBX Data Logger that matches the interface named in each section: RS232 for a serial SMDR port, TCP client when the PBX accepts connections, TCP server when the PBX pushes records to the logger, or FTP for systems that write CDR files. Then open Modules → Query Parse Filter → Data query, click Setup and select the parser named in the section. The general steps are shown on the SMDR listener page; every other supported system is listed on the supported PBX index.

Settings from the manufacturer's documentation

Taken from ATT-Merlin-Magix-SMDR, Veramark - Connectivity Guide, SMDR - some formats. Values are those stated in the documentation; confirm them against your firmware release.

SettingDocumented value
factory settings100-record queue, 15-digit dialed numbers, account code displayed if entered, Talk Time disabled, calls recorded = incoming and outgoing, call length = 40 sec (range 0-255), format = Basic
SMDR date/time format in the reportdate mm/dd/yy with leading zeros; time hh:mm 24-hour (military)
SMDR report formatsBasic (factory default) or ISDN
CAS vs MERLIN LEGEND Reportercannot both be active/connected at the same time (only one serial link)

Switching SMDR output on, as documented

  1. Options -> SMDR -> Format -> select Basic SMDR or ISDN SMDR, then Enter.
  2. Options -> SMDR -> Call Length -> set the SMDR minimum time in seconds (0-255; factory default 040).
  3. Options -> SMDR -> Call Report -> select In/Out or Out Only for which calls SMDR records.
  4. Options -> SMDR -> Auth Code -> choose whether Home Extension Number or Authorization Code is recorded in the account field.
  5. Options -> SMDR -> UDP -> select Log Incoming/Outgoing or Log None to control whether private-network (tandem) trunk calls are recorded.

Record format notes

  • Sample Merlin Legend SMDR line layout is 'C DATE TIME CALLED_NUMBER DUR. LINE STN. ACCOUNT', e.g. 'C 01/08/01 11:50 6126729000 00:00:46 804 230', with IN or IN* replacing the called number field for incoming calls.
  • SMDR records are sent to the RS-232 SMDR jack on the control unit's processor module; they can print directly to a serial printer or feed a connected CAS/CAT call-accounting system or the MERLIN LEGEND Reporter PC application.

Reports and a database

Once records arrive, the logger writes them to a text file or to any ODBC database in real time, or hands them to the PBX Reports utility for manual, scheduled and e-mailed reports with a built-in web server. See exporting call log data to a database for the database setup.
