Nortel Meridian and Norstar SMDR formats

Advanced PBX Data Logger includes 6 parsers for Nortel Meridian and Norstar systems. This page gathers them in one place. For each system you will find how the call records reach the logger, the parser to select, and the 76 fields in total that these parsers extract for PBX Reports or a database. Of these, 3 over RS-232; the rest are identified by their record layout and can arrive over a serial port or a LAN connection. The settings apply to our logger; other call accounting software may expect a different configuration.

Systems on this page

Connecting the logger

Add a data source in PBX Data Logger that matches the interface named in each section: RS232 for a serial SMDR port, TCP client when the PBX accepts connections, TCP server when the PBX pushes records to the logger, or FTP for systems that write CDR files. Then open Modules → Query Parse Filter → Data query, click Setup and select the parser named in the section. The general steps are shown on the SMDR listener page; every other supported system is listed on the supported PBX index.

You may also use a standard modem cable with all wires. In this case you can use the following communication parameters: 8-N-1 with hardware flow control.

If you use the pinout above the parameters will be: 7-N-1 without flow control.

Record format notes

  • Old-format inbound Normal/Start/End/Transfer records place RecID at column 1, originating device at 10-16, terminating device at 18-24, date at 38-42, time at 44-48, duration at 50-57.
  • Account Code events (RecID = 'A') carry the account code at columns 50-57 instead of a duration field.

Switching SMDR output on, as documented

  1. Set FCDR to NEW in LD 17 to switch the system to the richer 'New Format CDR' (3-line, 18-field-capable) record layout.

Record format notes

  • New CDR format record example: 'L 001 00 2238 2238 02/01 15:17:00 00:00:02.0' followed by '&' continuation lines; all fields are output even if blank (as spaces).

Station Message Detail Recording 6 (SMDR6)

The Station Message Detail Recording 6 (SMDR6) is a unit that connects to your Norstar Key System Unit (KSU) to record call activity. Each time a telephone call is made to or from your company, the information about the call is recorded. When the call is completed, information about the call is printed out in Call Records

Programming SMDR6

To access the SMDR6 Administration menu press [Feature] [9] [*] [2]. The display shows: SMDR6 Admin. Then configure following options as:

  • Printer: 38400 (press [CHANGE] to set new baudrate)
  • Format: SL-1 or SL-1 CLID (press [SHOW] then [CHANGE])
  • Report: All (output info about all calls)
  • Language: English
  • Access codes: leave unchanged
  • Feature: F999

Note: If you use M7100/M7208 telephones for programming SMDR6 use following buttons as:

  • [*] - NEXT
  • [O] - SHOW
  • [#] - CHANGE

Errors

When you use the FEATURE 9 * 2 code you may see some error messages:
INACTIVE FEATURE. That error message indicates that there is a problem with the connection between the phone system and the SMDR6 box. That connection is made using a standard RJ11 telephone cord (the same type of cord you would use to plug a telephone).
PRINTER PROBLEM. This error appears if connection between the SMDR6 unit and a computer is broken or our software is not active. Please, verify the following: cable (you need a straight serial cable, not a NULL cable), a COM port number, baud rate, launch our software on your computer.

  1. SL-1 CLID format only reports Calling Line ID on lines capable of delivering it; other lines fall back to SL-1 Standard format automatically.

Record format notes

  • The SL-1 record format does not support reporting Bearer Capability or DDI Busy records.

Reports and a database

Once records arrive, the logger writes them to a text file or to any ODBC database in real time, or hands them to the PBX Reports utility for manual, scheduled and e-mailed reports with a built-in web server. See exporting call log data to a database for the database setup.
